YouTube Australia reveals Miley Cyrus leads the list of trending music videos in 2013

SHE came in like a wrecking ball so it is no surprise to anyone on the planet that Miley Cyrus was the most viewed musician on YouTube in Australia this year.

Her Wrecking Ball clip eclipsed Korean pop culture sensation Psy and his much-anticipated video for Gentleman as the top trending music video of 2013.

Her We Can’t Stop single came in at No.5.

What was shocking in videoville was they both eclipsed the most talked about video of the year in Australia.

Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines and its added “extras” of topless models cavorting alongside the singer, T.I. and Pharrell Williams came in at No. 4 behind one of the late runners for eyeballs and clicks from Katy Perry with the super CGI junglefest of Roar.

Comedy clips and those that weren’t intentionally funny rated strongly with Australians with YouTube’s top 10 trending video of the year taken out by Norwegian brothers Ylvis with their deliberately novel video for simple pop single The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?).

Those cray cray Norwegians figured in the top 10 again with the 35 seconds of hysteria that was the original Harlem Shake dance made by their national army.

The footage of a confrontation between a young man and police during the Sydney Mardi gras celebrations was the only major news event which made the top 10 trending videos.

Australian YouTube celebrities including Troye Sivan, singing sister Jayesslee and pop stars 5 Seconds of Summer were among those who attracted a spike in international followers for their channels in the past year.

YouTube spokeswoman Annie Baxter said going viral on YouTube depended on the subject’s engagement with their online community or the endorsement of a celebrity.

She said the local YouTube stars including Sivan and sister pop duo Jayesslee were mobbed in the streets by their teen fans even if their parents had never heard of them.

“One of the keys to Troy’s success besides being authentic and compelling on screen is he talks and interacts, listens and responds to his fans,” Baxter said.

“It is a virtual support network.”

Baxter said the young YouTube stars who drove traffic to the video hub did so by sharing rather than competing with each other.

“Their endorsement leads to more shares and what you also see is them being proactive about sharing, asking their fans to share and subscribe to other channels. They are always prompting their fans to be involved,” Baxter said.

While marketing gurus worldwide are trying to orchestrate the viral sharing of videos, Baxter said the success or failure of music videos, comedy clips or other visual offerings depended on a tastemaker champion to share across the vision across their social media platforms.

The other key to success was inspiring fans and comedians to make their own parody or tribute to a clip.

Ylvis have inspired more than 1.7 million “homages” to The Fox clip.
